The expression of miR-320a, miR-25-3p, and miR-148a-3p significantly correlated with stage. None of the miRNAs were correlated with survival outcome and therapeutic response. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the relative abundance of miRNAs in serum may be explored for the development of miRNA-based assays for better diagnosis and prognosis of NSCLC. Moreover, further studies are warranted to elucidate the role of some of the less explored miRNAs, such as miR-375 and miR-320a, in the pathogenesis of NSCLC. BACKGROUND &amp; AIMS The quantity and quality of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue is an important prognostic factor for clinical outcomes across several illnesses. Clinically acquired computed tomography (CT) scans are commonly used for quantification of body composition, but manual analysis is laborious and costly. The primary aim of this study was to develop an automated body composition analysis framework using CT scans. METHODS CT scans of the 3rd lumbar vertebrae from critically ill, liver cirrhosis, pancreatic cancer, and clear cell renal cell carcinoma patients, as well as renal and liver donors, were manually analyzed for body composition. Ninety percent of scans were used for developing and validating a neural network for the automated segmentation of skeletal muscle and adipose tissues. Network accuracy was evaluated with the remaining 10 percent of scans using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), which quantifies the overlap (0&nbsp;=&nbsp;no overlap, 1&nbsp;=&nbsp;perfect overlap) between human and automated segmentations. RESULTS Of the 893 patients, 44% were female, with a mean (±SD) age and body mass index of 52.7 (±15.8) years old and 28.0 (±6.1) kg/m2, respectively. In the testing cohort (n&nbsp;=&nbsp;89), DSC scores indicated excellent agreement between human and network-predicted segmentations for skeletal muscle (0.983&nbsp;±&nbsp;0.013), and intermuscular (0.900&nbsp;±&nbsp;0.034), visceral (0.979&nbsp;±&nbsp;0.019), and subcutaneous (0.986&nbsp;±&nbsp;0.016) adipose tissue. Network segmentation took ~350 milliseconds/scan using modern computing hardware. CONCLUSIONS Our network displayed excellent ability to analyze diverse body composition phenotypes and clinical cohorts, which will create feasible opportunities to advance our capacity to predict health outcomes in clinical populations. BACKGROUND &amp; AIMS There have been inconsistent findings on the association between dietary patterns and depressive symptoms (DepS). In addition, studies have used single analysis methods to identify dietary patterns. In the current study, we aimed to determine the association between dietary patterns, derived by principal component analysis (PCA), reduced-rank regressions (RRR) and partial least-squares (PLS), and DepS among adults using a cohort study in Australia. METHODS We examined a total of 1743 study participants (?24 years, 48.9% males) using cross-sectional and longitudinal data from the North West Adelaide Health Study (NWAHS). The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale was used to assess DepS and a score ?16 was considered as having depression. Dietary data were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), folate, magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) densities were chosen as the response variables for RRR and PLS analyses. Dietand the 'prudent' pattern tended to be associated with a reduced risk of DepS. This suggests that dietary interventions may assist with the treatment of DepS. However, current evidence on the impact of diet on DepS should be supported using further longitudinal studies with extended follow up, larger sample sizes and repeated measures. INTRODUCTION Community-based health fairs can help identify at-risk populations, improve health literacy, and facilitate access to medical services. No community-based screenings specifically targeting vocal health were identified in the literature. The purpose of this study is to compare the results of community-based vocal health screenings across two populations a group of community members with unknown risk of voice problems, and a group of actors belonging to a profession with a known increased risk of voice problems. METHODS Vocal health screenings were conducted at two free, community-based health fair events in the Los Angeles area. One was open to the public, and one was organized specifically for actors who are members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. A total of 142 community members (94 nonactors and 48 actors) were administered a questionnaire on current vocal health and voice-related quality of life indices (Vocal Handicap Index-10, Vocal Fatigue Index), followed by review and discussion with a laryngologist or a speech pathologist trained in assessment and treatment of voice disorders. RESULTS A significantly higher percentage of actors (55.1%) reported current voice problems than nonactors (33.0%; χ2&nbsp;=&nbsp;7.122, df&nbsp;=&nbsp;1, P&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.008). Additionally, as measured by the Vocal Fatigue Index 2 subscale, actors reported a greater amount of perceived pain with phonation than the nonactors. Despite over half of the actors reporting current voice concerns, only 7% reported having sought medical advice regarding these concerns. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that vocal health screenings can help identify persons with voice complaints. However, in order to determine if vocal health screenings help close prevalence-presentation gap and are useful to both medical professionals and participants, more research is needed. For CP, FS and HM were measured with and without additional Power Firing. Each subgroup contained 15 specimens. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, one-way ANOVA followed by Scheffé test, Kruskal-Wallis-H-, Mann-Whitney-U-, and Spearman-Rho-test (p less then 0.05). The Weibull modulus was calculated using the maximum likelihood estimation method. RESULTS AP and CP presented higher FS than IL. LP presented the highest Weibull modulus. CP showed lower KIC values than AP, and AP was not significant compared to LP and IE. The most 3BW material loss was observed for CP.
